Gate Driver recommendation request for actuator control.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5108

Hi, TI expert.

The customer company is reviewing Gate Driver for Actuator control.

The customer was reviewing the LM5108DRCR, but the performance he wanted was not coming out. For more efficient control, he hopes to recommend a better Full Bridge product or Half Bridge product.

[specification]

1. Control: DC Linear Actuator control, H-BRIDGE circuit

2. Switching element: N-ch, MOSFET (STU432S)

3. Control parts: Linear Actuator (24VDC, 5A)

4. Control operation: PWM (output control), forward/reverse control

Can you recommend a suitable device?

Thank you.

  • Hello Grady,

Thank you for supporting the LM5108 with your customer. I did look up the Mosfet part number and I see that the gate charge is not very high at 23nC and the Vds rating is 40V. So the LM5108 has adequate gate drive current to drive this Mosfet, and the driver voltage rating on the high voltage pins exceeds the Mosfet Vds.

Can you explain what performance the LM5108 is not providing for the customer? Is there a frequency limitation or high duty cycle limitation including 100% duty on the HO output?

    Regards,

  • Hi, Richard Herring

The customer will reply as follows.

    1. Can you explain what performance the LM5108 is not providing for the customer?

    - Based on the circuit below, use PWM PORTX4 for full bridge control, and if there is a driver capable of forward/reverse/output control with less than two, please recommend it.

    2. Is there a frequency limitation or high duty cycle limitation including 100% duty on the HO output?

    - It is currently being tested with LM5108, and there is no other lacking performance.

    - Currently, 16KHz is in use, and at least 95% duty (100% if possible) is required.

    Please check. Thank you.

  • Hello Grady,

This statement is not quite clear to me: " Based on the circuit below, use PWM PORTX4 for full bridge control, and if there is a driver capable of forward/reverse/output control with less than two, please recommend it"

I am assuming this may mean, the existing drivers need 4 PWM control for each of the two drivers LI and HI inputs. Is there a driver that can control with less PWM inputs.

If you can clarify the desired driver feature I can recommend drivers that may be a good fit. There are drivers that can control both high side and low side driver inputs with one PWM control.

For the second question. With a bootstrap bias for HB-HS there cannot be 100% HO duty cycle since the HB-HS capacitor requires the HS to switch to ground to recharge the HB capacitor. There are solutions that can be added to achieve 100% duty on HO if required.

    Regards,
