TPS2546: Use in device mode

Part Number: TPS2546

Hello all,

I'm considering TPS2546 to manage a USB 3.0 charging port in a design based on a Jacinto 6 processor. This USB port will be used mainly in host mode, but sometimes we will need it to be in device mode.

The idea is to connect USB_DRVBUS to the TPS2546 EN pin to enable de power switch only in device mode. Unfortunately, I have detected while EN=0 not only the power switch is OFF but also the data signal switches and this is something that goes against having the USB in device mode since I need the data lines.

Since:

  • The only TSP2546 modes I will use is SDP and CDP
  • I suspect the data lines switch purpose is only to toggle between the different DCP divider modes

My question is: Would be OK to bypass externally the TPS2546 data lines switches by doing any of the following options, so I would have the data lines available in device mode (EN=0)?

Thank you very much in advance!

  • Hi,

Based on the block diagrams of the device I think the changes (both) you proposed should work theoretically since you are trying to bypass the data line switch. But I think the top one (no connect at DM/DP_OUT, D+/D- to host controller) might be a better choice here. I recommend you test out the conditions in 8.4.3 and 8.4.4 (system power state, CTL1~3 setting, ILIM_HI setting) for the modification and see if the modification inhibits any other functionalities.

    Regards

  • Hello Tommy,

Thank you very much for your response.

Based on the block diagrams we have the same conclusion. Unfortunately, what I need from your side is a deeper response. I need not know before manufacturing the design if this setup is feasible or not. Would it be possible for you to double check internally to confirm if this setup have risk of a potential issue?

Thank you very much in advance. Regards!

  • Hi,

It should not have issues with your proposal.
