TPS65988: Is never using SPI acceptable?

Part Number: TPS65988

Good evening,

I'm looking at using the TPS65988 in an application. From reading the datasheet and the EVM user guide, it seems to suggest that the device can be equally configured via SPI (with flash) or I2C. I have seen a few topics quite similar to this, but I couldn't find one that explicitly said that SPI wasn't ever needed, not even the first time.

I wanted to confirm: Is it fine to only ever configure the device via I2C, and never load anything via SPI? I.e. nothing special is needed from the binary generated from the TI GUI? Or does it need to be loaded with the binary from the GUI via SPI the first time, and then you can use I2C for configuration/patching afterwards?

Kind regards
