ptn78020wah shutting down

We are having problems with the ptn78020wah shutting down after 10-15 minutes of operation.  We have measured the temperature at various instances and believe it may be shutting down due to overheating, but the issue is why it would overheat and how to fix it under the following operating conditions:

Vin: 24V

Vout: 12V

Iout: 3A

*The ptn78020wah is in no way enclosed, as we are only testing functionality at the moment.

The ptn78020wah shuts down after 10-15 minutes, and will shortly after restart and function normally for a short time, only to again shutdown; this cycle repeats indefinitely.

Thank-you for your help,

Tim

  • The PTN 78020WAH for best thermal performance  at  24Vin, 12Vout at 3Amp load or any other votltage  must be directly soldered into a 100mm x100mm double sided PCB  surface area with 2 ounce copper. The most thermally active component based upon the published thermal SOA data is the  power diode. The thermal shutdown after 10-15 minutes indicates minimal thermal conduction to the copper PCB area.
