TPS61178: Comparison between IC TPS61178RNWR and TPS611781RNWR

Part Number: TPS61178

Hi Texas Instruments team,

Currently we are out of stocks of IC TPS61178RNWR. However, we have the stock of TPS611781RNWR. I would like to get your help to see whether we can use the IC TPS611781RNWR to replace for the TPS61178RNWR or not.

We already reviewed the datasheet between two those ICs and we saw that they have 2 differences operation mode and current.

We have concern that with the TPS61178RNWR, for the light load current, it will operate in the PFM mode by reducing the frequency(change) to improve efficiency during a light-load. But if with the TPS611781RNWR, it will operate in the Forced PWM mode so the frequency is fixed then whether the load is high or low in this case?

Appreciate your advice whether we can replace the IC TPS61178RNWR by TPS611781RNWR or not. Your advice is very valuable so that we can have a correct disposition for our production plan

Thank You

  • Hi Dang,

    Just as you said.

The difference between is that TPS61178 works in PFM at light load but TPS611781 in FPWM.

This will influence a lot of efficiency at light load.

Also, the switching frequency varies in light load for TPS61178, but TPS611781 will not. This will impact the EMI performance.

Please evaluate whether these two points will affect in your application.

    Best Regards

    Fergus
