BQ25120A: VOVP in ship mode

Part Number: BQ25120A

Hi,

A quick clarifying question about BQ25120A operating modes. Table 10 in datasheet shows that VOVP is inactive during ship mode. Does this mean that there is no overvoltage protection and PMID would see whatever voltage is applied to VIN? Or does it mean that the OVP hardware is irrelevant in ship mode because PMID is disconnected from the input regardless, so the overvoltage comparator is disable to save power?

Put another way: If the end user tries to wake the device from ship mode by plugging in a 12V power supply, will the input voltage propagate through to PMID and any downstream loads?

Thanks,

Carl

  • Hi Carl,

In this case the Table indicates that VOVP is inactive during shipmode because VOVP is irrelevant while in shipmode since input voltage is not applied. When input voltage is applied above UVLO the charger transitions to Ready or Charge mode. These modes do have VOVP enabled. The implementation is such that, if VIN is applied at a voltage above OVP, PMID will only rise up to battery voltage since VIN will be considered in invalid input.

In the case of your end user, PMID will not see 12V, only the voltage that your battery is at as the device awakens from shipmode.

  • Thanks Juan, that's what I was hoping to hear.
