TPS6594-Q1: Would one 1212 or one 1213 work?

Hi TI expert,

I know that TPS65941111 is not meant to operate as a standalone device. Does that mean I would also need to purchase one TPS65941212 or TPS65941213? Would it be okay if I only use one TPS65941212 or one TPS65941213 without TPS65941111?

You would need to purchase a TPS65941212 or TPS65941213.

The TPS65941212 and TPS65941213 are also not standalone devices, so these devices need to be connected to a TPS65941111. If you were to try using one TPS65941212 or TPS65941213 device alone, you would see the interrupt SPMI_ERR_INT, which would cause an orderly shutdown and the device would fail to reach the active state.

Hi Megan, thank you for letting me know that. I'm using TPS65941111 EVB for some validation. Does that mean I would need to but TPS65941212/TPS65941213 EVB? How should I collaborate TPS65941111 EVB and TPS65941212/TPS65941213 EVB? Do I need some connection or rework on the boards?

Hi Charlotte,

The two EVMs can be stacked on top of one another. The stack-up headers will connect all the necessary signals between the two boards. Instructions for using the multiple EVMs together can be found in the TPS6594x Evaluation Module User Guide in the "Getting Started: Multiple EVM Evaluation" section.

Hi Charlotte,

1. The boards themselves are capable of functioning with a standalone PMIC. The NVM (non-volatile memory) on the PMIC is what dictates if the device can be in a standalone configuration or needs to be paired with another device. The information on the NVMs can be found in the user guide with the corresponding title in the TPS6594-Q1 technical documentation on the product page. The NVM is generally chosen to match the system it is powering. Some of the standalone NVMs we have are the TPS65941515 and the TPS6594133A, but you can also create a custom NVM in the GUI. The NVM on the EVM can be changed using the GUI, with the instructions found in the Scalable PMIC's GUI User's Guide.

2. The differences between the TPS65941111, TPS65941212, and TPS65941213 can be found in the respective user guides that I have linked below. The most prominent differences are:

TPS65941212 and TPS65941213 are master devices with BUCK1, BUCK2, and BUCK3 tied in a multiphase configuration
TPS65941111 is a slave device that will work with either of the other devices. It has BUCK1, BUCK2, BUCK3, and BUCK4 tied in a multiphase configuration.
TPS65941212 has combined MCU and SoC error signal monitoring
TPS65941213 has dedicated MCU and SoC error signal monitoring

The TPS65941515 is intended to power Jacinto 7 J7200 DRA821. The largest differences are the pre-regulator voltage is 3.3 V, and the BUCKs are set in a 2+2 configuration (BUCK1 and BUCK2 are combined, BUCK3 and BUCK4 are combined, BUCK5 is single phase), and LDO2 outputs 0.85 V. The TPS6594133A is configurable to power the Automotive Jacinto J784S4 or J721S2 processors. The largest differences are the pre-regulator voltage is either 3.3 V or 5 V, and the BUCKs are set in a 2+1+1 configuration (BUCK1 and BUCK2 are combined, BUCK3, BUCK4, and BUCK5 are single phase), and LDO2 is set in bypass mode to output 3.3 V. Thank you Megan. Do TPS6594133A and TPS65941515 have EVB? Or they are sold as individual parts? If they are sold as individual parts, can I directly replace TPS65941212 EVB with TPS6594133A and TPS65941515?

Hi Charlotte,

TPS6594133A and TPS65941515 do not have an evaluation board. The devices are sold as individual parts that can be directly replaced.

Additionally, the difference between the part numbers is the NVM configuration. This configuration can be changed using the GUI, with the instructions here: Scalable PMIC NVM Update Guide. The NVM settings for the devices are listed in the User Guides that I have linked in the previous response.

Either directly replacing the TPS6594-Q1 device on the EVM or reconfiguring the NVM with the GUI will allow the evaluation board to function as one of the single PMIC solutions.
