BQ34Z100EVM: Lithium Thionyl Chloride and Lithium Sulfuryl Chloride Battery Packs Gauging

I just ordered the BQ34Z100EVM board. I have a few battery packs I'd like to use it with, namely:

-4 Series 3 Parallel Lithium Thionyl Chloride (primary, 29 Ah per cell capacity, 3.67V 800mA max constant current)

-4 Series 3 Parallel Lithium Sulfuryl Chloride (primary, 32Ah per cell capacity, 3.93V 2000mA max constant current)

I don't see any matching models in the Chemistry tab in Battery Management Studio. I asked TI support for help, and they sent me to this forum to ask for help. Can you please suggest what steps I should take in order to be able to use the BQ34Z100EVM board with the batteries I stated above, or point me to any resources I could use? Thanks a lot!

Hello Rob,

Check that you have the latest Gas gauge chemistry updater installed and see if your model is listed.

Otherwise use GPCCHEM tool to find the closest match

I've installed the latest chemistry update and I can see a number Lithium Thionyl Chloride cells, however there are no Lithium Sulfuryl Chloride cells on the list.

I'll use the GPCCHEM tool, but in case I don't find any match that'd be close enough to Sulfuryl Chloride, is it still possible to send the batteries to Texas Instruments for modelling? I know people have been recommended that option before on this forum- I'm wondering how this process works.

If you don't find a match, then you will need to send cells for characterization. It will require 3 to 9 new cell and takes a long time.

How long does it normally take to characterise a cell? Weeks or months? What are the costs involved? I’d imagine every cell is different, but it’d be great if you could give me an average time it takes.

Do I need to send them connected as per target configuration (in my case 3 battery packs connected in parallel, each containing 4 cells connected in series)? Or do I just need to send single cells?

And lastly, is it possible to characterise the cells yourself? If so, what does this process involve?

It usually takes 4 weeks. There is no cost. The characterization process is too complex to explain on E2E. We require three single cells, not connected together in a pack.

The way this usually works is for a customer to work with a TI Field Applications Engineer, who coordinates this with the team in Dallas.

Please email the TI UK office and ask for a TI Field Applications Engineer who supports TI products.
