BQ40Z80: Can not connect BQStudio with BQ40Z80

Hi Team,

I recently received my custom made BQ40Z80 PCBs and I am not trying to communicate with them. I was able to communicate with one of the devices yesterday and change the Pin configurations and Cell configuration too. This morning, when I am trying to open the BQStudio app, but the device would not connect to the application.

The application does autodetect the chip and opens the application, but the moment the application opens, the voltage is at 65534mV and current fluctuates between -8191, 0 and 8191. Any attempt to Refresh or scan gives me the error, "No acknowledge by device". I am using a 6S configuration and using the Test version of the BQStudio and the EV2400 which is present on my BQ40Z80EVM board. here is the image of the dashboard of BQStudio. I am shorting the Bat+ to Pack+ using a clip as opposed to the WAKE button on the EVM, and as soon as disconnect the clip, my board loses connection.

Hello Bhavil,

Does the TI EVM work fine? If not, then the EV2400 may have a problem

Hi Shirish,

Yes, the EVM works properly. I did identify the issue due to which my custom PCB was not working. It was because the thermistors at pins 10 and 11 of BQ40Z80 were not connected. I created some new boards with the thermistors connected, and they were working

However, the two boards created previously were not working properly(the boards due to which I raised the question) and would not work even after adding the thermistors. Any clue what might be happening here?

Try programming the default srec to the non-working boards. You can read it out from the working device.

Hi Sirish,

When I try to update the firmware, it gives me the following error "Program Srec: Packet checksum mismatch"

Hello Bhavil,

Read Word 0xD and if the value is greater than 100, then try again. If not, then it might be harder to recover or not recoverable.

Hi Shirish,

When I Read Word 0xD, the hex value returned is 0000(see the picture attached). I also did the same for my working EVM and it returned 0056. What does this command do?

Hello Bhavil,

This reads remaining capacity as a percentage. Max value is 100. If a value greater than 100 is returned then either the gauge is not programmed or there was an error in programming.

Based on your check, the gauge is programmed. The only thing you can do is to try to program the srec repeatedly. If it successfully programs once, then it will recover. The other alternative to try is to write default values to data flash by importing defaults and Write All. If that is successful, then it will improve your chances of programming the srec successfully.

Hi Shirish,

Importing defaults does not work for me, as I can just import the defaults. but can not write them because the "Write all" button is greyed out for me. Programming the srec would not work, it just throws up the error "Program Srec: Packet checksum mismatch" as I mentioned before.

I guess the problem is just board specific then, since some of the other boards are working with similar configurations.
