TPS23734: TPS23734 ACF/Flyback design

Part Number: TPS23734
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP22806, TPS23731

Hi all,

I have a question regards using the TPS23734 in my design. I have already analysed PMP23278B application note for designing an ACF converter, but I am wondering if there is an option to slightly change the design into a flyback converter. There is no need to run synchronous rectification on the secondary side in my design.

As far as I understand, to make this possible, it is required by simply change the transformer (suited for flyback topologies), and disable GAT2 output.

I am wondering if that’s correct. Can I ask you to help me clear this up?

Best regards, Andrzej

  • Hi Andrzej,

    Thanks for reaching out!

PMP22806 (https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP23278) is a 12-V output flyback converter reference design using TPS23731. PMP22806 with flyback uses primary side regulation (no optocoupler is needed in feedback loop), while TPS23278 is with the optocoupler which is secondary side regulation.

If you want to use primary side regulation you can all follow PMP22806. If you want to use TPS23734 to replace TPS23731, you can connect VB to DT, then keep other pins connection the same.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Diang,

Thank you for the provided information. I Would like to make the design suitable for using both TPS23731 and TPS23734 ICs to minimize supplychain issues.

As far as I understand, will my design work propely if I have If prepare a possibility to tie the VB pin (pin37) to DT pin (pin31) in my design and make the TPS23731 upgradable for TPS23734?

I have another question: If I have my design already suited for TPS23734 (flyback topology) will it also work if I place the TPS23731? There are slight differences in capacitor/resistor values in both of the reference designs.

    Best regards,

    Andrzej

  • Hi Andrzej,

TPS23731 and TPS23734 are pin-pin compatible except the TPS23734 has additional pins for driving GAT2 for active clamping forward converter.

For flyback converter, you can consider they are pin-pin compatible. So if you have a flyback topology of TPS23734, you can replace it to TPS23731 without modification normally.

    Best regards,

    Diang
