BQ40Z50-R2: The understanding of at rest

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

1. How should I understand the rest? It means in relax state or in sleep state?

2. I noticed there are "Cell balancing in sleep" and "Enter RELAX Mode Cell Balancing".

I am confused about these two situations. What's the difference?

3. From my understanding, the system will enter sleep first, and then it can be enter relax mode. Because the conditions for entering relax mode are more stringent. Is it right?

  • Hello Fabio,

It means relax state, so if the current is below the Quit Current threshold for the corresponding Chg/Dsg Relax Time then it will be in relax state. We have a helpful illustration in the TRM:

There are two different modes to allow cell balancing, either in sleep or in relax, so the bits give you configurability to choose which modes you would allow balancing to occur. Relax mode is fairly easy to enter, sleep mode will be more difficult in general, depending on the setting this can change. Cell balancing won't start until an OCV is taken so it may not start balancing for some time while in RELAX mode.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • From my understanding, the sleep mode and relax mode do not conflict.

So the gauge may be in relax mode as well as sleep mode at the same time? Is it right?

If I change "Start time for bal in sleep" to 1h, after 1h(The gauge in relax mode and sleep mode, but OCV is not read)  the gauge begin to cell balance in sleep mode.(The current <sleep current and threshold discharge current)

But after another 3~4h, the gauge will continue to read OCV? And then the cell balance time will be recalculated and updated?

  • Hello Fabio,

No the cell balancing will not start until a valid OCV is taken, if we do not have a good OCV we cannot calculate the cell balance times. So even if the gauge is in relax or sleep it may not be cell balancing until a valid OCV is taken.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
