TPS2546: DCP mode give 500mA only

Hi Experts,

I am posting this query to give clarification to the customer

The customer is using this mode (see pic below).

They could not get more than 500mA when charging an Android phone at a 45% bat charge. But when using a COTS charger they could get more than 1500mA.

What could be the possible reason?

Here are the full details below:

Our application is purely DCP mode, as I mentioned earlier, we could not achieve fast charging on the 0010 CTL/ILIM_SEL (DCP_Auto) settings, the best we could achieve is only about 500mA.

I also tried the DCP_Force mode setting, the CTL setting highlighted below. With this mode, I can only get less than 300mA only. I tried it with Android and iPhone mobile phones. What surprised me is, if I used a COTS charger, I can get more than 1.8A using the same mobile device that I’m using.

In general, I already tried all the DCP_Auto mode and DCP_Force but I could not get a current higher than 500mA.

Hi Jonathan,

Can you check if they have ILIM_HI resistor set correctly?

Please refer to section 9.2.2.1 Current-Limit Settings.

Hi Tommy,

Yes and the ILIM_HI is set to 16.9K. Customer is using the TPS2546EVM-064 for their testing.

Hi Ernest,

May I know what is the input source and the capability? Are you using the AUX input or the host side USB connector as the input?

Hi,

I tested the setting with a Samsung and I can see 1A charging current.

Please keep in mind that the DCP current advertisement is only broadcasting the current the device can offer. The actual current drawn depends on how much the sink device wants to take and TPS2546 have no control over this.

Can you please tell me the Samsung mobile phone model you use and the battery charge level? I totally agree that the actual current drawn depends on how much the sink device wants to take.

The last testing I've done on the EVM was using Samsung S5 and I can only draw 600mA at 50% bat level. Then If I use COTS wall charger I can easily draw 1A. Do you think the EVM I'm using could be faulty?

Hi,

The Samsung phone I used in my test is a S20 5G SE (the charging port is Type-C). The battery level is around 54%.

I think it might have something to do with the charging port type.

Hi Tommy,

They also tested using Samsung Galaxy S5, could it be any other issue that they might have missed out? Is there a possibility that EVM might be faulty?

Hi,

Just to make sure that Samsung Galaxy S5's charging port is micro-USB, correct? Since the phone I tested has a Type-C port so the result might not be 100% comparable.

Have they tried plugging the Type-A male port to a Type-A port and check the charge current they are seeing?
