TPS74701-Q1: floating soldering

Part Number: TPS74701-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS74701

Hi, Expert,

TPS74701 is used in my application to output about 1V2/220mA as second level power LDO. Input voltage is 3V3. Unfortunately, there are some board with PIN10 floating(not soldering well). They are still work well of our product. May I know any risk of it?

Thanks in advance!

Jingjing

  • Hello Jingjing,

The internal bond wire from the die to the package may not be able to support those conditions on its own.

I am waiting for a response on the specifications of this package and bond wires to be able to do that calculation for you.

    Best,

    Juliette

  • Hello Jingjing,

So we calculated the fusing current of the wires in the package, and this package should be able to handle 220mA on the output.

However, this becomes an electromigration concern (long term failure) on the die because you force more current to flow through the metal layer for the connected pin, increasing the current density.

This will have to be a risk that the customer will have to consider.

    Best,

    Juliette

  • Hi Juliette,

Thanks to replay. Understood you mentioned electromigration risk.  We decided to re-work those PCBAs. I will close this topic.

    Best,

    Jingjing
