TPS65988DJEVM: How to update the TPS65988DJEVM - what connections are needed? can this be done with the breakoff TIVA PCB?

I have to say that basic documentation is missing here. I received the EVK and have been scouring the documentation and I cannot find how to update the TPS65988DJEVM with settings from the Application customization tool. There is a break-off board on the EVK labelled TIVA and on the back mentions "limited booster pack support". It looks like it works as a debug module. Is this what needs to be connected to the PCB with the TPS65988? Please provide some basic guidance!

The design is not Thunderbolt. It is a USB C design. The product connects to a host PC Via USB C on Port 1 and gets power from there, but can also get power from a second USB C port. The product is expandable and depending on what is added, the second USB C port is needed since the maximum power requirement is 29 watts (minimum is 5 watts). Data will only be on Port 1, Port 2 is for power only.

Hi David,

The TPS65988DDJ is designed for Thunderbolt 3 devices. For your design, you could use the TPS65988DKEVM.

Here are some resources that I think would be helpful:

1- The TPS6598x configuration tool (GUI V6.1.4) is used to configure firmware according to your design requirements.

2- This document describes the functionality of the tool and how to get started.

3- To answer your question about the TIVA board, you do not need to break-off the board. The TIVA is already internally connected to the board. In the document above, you will notice that the previous devices used an FTDI chip instead, but the steps for configuration are very similar and will be outlined in the document as well.

The TPS65988DKEVM is not available. There is no stack anywhere. The TPS65988DJEVM users guide is the same as the guide for the TPS65988DKEVM. The image attached

is the TPS65988DKEVM. The TIVA PCB is a break-off board. What is different about the TPS65988DKEVM and the TPS65988DJEVM? All instructions that I can find for these are identical.

I have installed the TPS6598x configuration tool (GUI V6.1.4) and have gone through it and am becoming familiar with it.

Hi David,

1- You should be able to order a TPS65988DK EVM here → Click on "Request" and follow the instructions there. Please let me know if there is any issue with this.

2- The difference between DJ and DK are the features supported from a firmware perspective. The TPS65988DJ is designed for Thunderbolt 3 designs typically for Intel reference designs only. Therefore, the TPS6598x configuration tool does not support this device.

On the other hand, the tool does support the TPS65988DK and can be used to configure settings according to your design requirements. The user guide is the same for both devices because the devices are very similar, but each device is supported for a different use case. I hope that makes sense.

I already purchased the TPS65988DJEVM an. If I replace the TPS65988DJ with a TPS65988DK will it work as a TPS65988DKEVM?

Yes, once you program it correct TPS65988DK FW from the GUI. 6.1.4 GUI support TPS65988DK.

I replaced the TPS65988DJ with a TPS65988DK. The EVM does not operate. How do I program the EVM so that it works? I suspect that this is due to the default flash was for the DJ version. How can I get the EVM to operate as the TPS65988DKEVM?

I found that there was a problem with the soldering of the TPS65988. LDO_3v3 was not connected. Now I am able to read and re-program the flash on the EVK
