UCC28056: About avoiding burst mode

Part Number: UCC28056

Burst mode is a very effective operating mode for high efficiency and energy saving, but we would like to avoid this operation because we cannot allow intermittent input ripples in our applications.
Is there any way to operate in continuous mode even at light loads of 10% or less?

  • Hello Akira-san,

Thank you for your interest in the UCC28056 TM-PFC controller.

Burst-mode is a built-in feature of this device and unfortunately it cannot be defeated or disabled.  This device is designed for typical applications in a low-cost package with very few pins, so external control of burst-mode operation is not available.

If burst-mode was disabled, then the switching frequency for loads < 10% of full power would have to rise into the MHz range and light-load losses would go way up.
The only way to keep out of burst mode is to enable a minimum load for the PFC when the output load drops below 10%.
I understand that this is an undesirable option, but that is the reality of this situation.

    Regards,
    Ulrich

  • Hello Ulrich

I understand the content of your reply.
We recognize that the performance of this device is excellent, but we have decided not to adopt it this time.
If there is an opportunity to use it in another application, I would like to consider it.
    Thank you for your reply.
