BQ76920: Driving parallel MOSFET for high current using BQ76920

Part Number: BQ76920

Hi,

We are considering BQ76920 as AFE for our BMS application .

We need to control (ON/OFF) load current above 300A (100 to 600A) for which we are using low side back to back connector MOSFET in parallel combinations .

Total MOSFET gate charge will be around 1000nC and builtin BQ76920 gate driver will not be enough to have required turn on/off time.

Can you suggest additional low side gate driver to drive parallel connected MOSFET ?

Or please suggest if there is any alternate way.

Thanks

Vasu

  • Hello Vasu,

The BQ76920 is able to drive FETs in parallel, although as mentioned, turn-on and turn-off times could be impacted.

I would recommend to characterize our device with your FETs to see if our driver's strength is sufficient. We have multiple reference designs that uses multiple FETs in parallel with no issues. In some cases turn-off may have to be improved, which can be done by using external turn-off circuitry. The BQ76920 should be able to handle the FETs.

We also have the BQ769x2 family which we also have tested with over 20 FETs in parallel.

  • Hello Luis H.S

    Thanks for your support.

Can you please share application links of reference design in which parallel back to back MOSFET  is driven by BQ76920 ?

  • Hello Vasu,

There are a few from this device's family BQ769x0 that show this. I will list a couple:

We have multiples reference designs for this family that you can search up. Hope this helped Slight smile
