BQ76942: temperature measurement range

Part Number: BQ76942

Hello,

We would like to know what temperature range can be measured with the bq769xx devices.

Can it support measuring a temperature range from -20oC all the way up to +125oC?

What would be the expected error at these extremes for typical 10K/100K NTCs?

Thanks very much, Keith

  • Dear Keith,

The devices can measure a wide range of temperatures. It is worth noting that if you wish to use temperature protections, most temperature protection registers are configurable from -40C to 120C.  If temperature protections are disabled, you aren't limited by these min/max values. At more extreme temperatures, you can expect an accuracy error of +/- 15mV with 18k/180k NTCs.

  • Hello,

What is the temperature range that can be read out from the TS1 and TS2 Temperature registers available in the "basic parameters" section?

    Thank you, Keith

  • Dear Keith,

That's a slightly tricky question as the device measures the voltage of the thermistor and then calculates the parameter using that voltage. The device uses a high-order polynomial to calculate temperature that relies on the thermistor coefficients, gain, and offset chosen by the user. For the range, the maximum value has never been reached while in use. The device can easily output +/-300C for measurements should it be necessary though. How high of a temperature are you expecting to read?

  • Hi Asher,

We want to be able to read a temperature up to about 125-130oC.  Looking at the protection features, they seem to be set at 120oC, so just wanted to confirm we could read above that.

    Thanks very much, Keith

  • Dear Keith,

You can definitely read temperatures that high. If protections are enabled, the protections will trigger at 120C at the most, but it can still measure temperatures greater than 120C, including 130C. Hope this helps!
