TPS23751: Support for a passive PSE

Part Number: TPS23751

POE team,

As a PD device, can the TPS23751 support a passive PSE? The customer needs the device to support passive PSEs and as many standard PSEs as possible (802.3at, 802.3bt).

This post seems to suggest it's possible, but it's not fully clear to me.

Thanks,

  • Hi Darren,

As opposed to an active PSE, a passive PSE does not follow any of the IEEE standards. Passive PSE delivers power without a negotiation process, thus it will deliver power at a fixed voltage regardless of any standard or even if the device does not support PoE. This is why in the thread you mentioned, it is referred to as "Always On", the passive PSE will just supply power to anything that is connected to it. The TPS23751 should be able to work with a passive PSE as long as it receives greater than 40 V.

    Best regards,

    Nahiyan Muzaffar
