Precision Current Limiter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM317, TPS2590

Hi,

Kindly advise if there is any suitable TI device to limit the current to <200mA. However the input and output voltage is maintained at +/-20V. Browse through TI site and seems like all are below 5.5V for USB application. Another option I've is the LM317 (cheaper) and TPS2590 (very expensive). Kindly do advise is there is alternative.

Thanks.

  • Hello 123,

The LM317 current limiter will have a series voltage drop of 4V. Therefore the LM317 needs to be placed before the +20V or -20V regulator (to limit the input current).
The LM317 will work for both the positive and negative supplies because it is a floating regulator.

The TPS2590 will limit the +20V directly, but is not compatible with the -20V supply.

  • Hi Ron,

    Thanks for the feedback..
Sorry that I posted the question wrongly. The design only require the +20V input with little +/- tolerance. Output will be +20V as well.
The main function of the device is to limit the output current from the input. Required output limit current is <200mA.
Kindly advise if there is better solution. Thanks..

  • For current limiting at the output, the TPS2590 is the best choice.
