TPS25854-Q1: Question about current limit

Part Number: TPS25854-Q1

Hello,

My customer is not familiar with USB charger spec and has a couple of questions about TPS25854-Q1 current limit as follows.

Q1:
Datasheet 10.3.8.1 says “For the normal application, it can short the ILIM pin to GND directly, which sets a default 3.55-A current limit with a maximum ±15% variation on each USB port to follow the Type-C specification.”.  Actually, what maximum load current does the Type-C specification specify? Which part of the Type-C spec should my customer refer to?

Q2:
In the first place, which is protected by the current limit, TPS25854-Q1 itself or charged devices connected via USB ports?

Best regards,

K.Hirano

  • Hi Hirano-san,

1, For the maximum current of Type C, you can refer to the below picture, it should be 3A. Our datasheet say''“For the normal application, it can short the ILIM pin to GND directly, which sets a default 3.55-A current limit with a maximum ±15% variation on each USB port to follow the Type-C specification.'' , it means that, if you short the ILIM to GND, then the current limit is 3017.5mA-4082.5mA, it can cover the maximum current 3A.

2, If the charged device connected follow the Type C spec, it will not drive larger than 3A, but if the charged device connected is shorted inside, TPS25854-Q1 will enter into current limit, protect the battery, and also protect the other device which is connected with the battery.

    Best Regards,

    Kuno
