LMG3410R070: Single phase to 3 phase to upgradation

Part Number: LMG3410R070

Hello experts,

for an onboard charger design, we are having 3.3kW Single PFC (using totempole pfc as front end) and followed by PSFB. Now planning to do incremental design for 3 phase with 11kW power capacity. Since the component utilization of existing 3.3kW is primary focus, making three single phase pfc boards and each to be operated in between R phase - Neutral, Y phase - neutral and  B Phase -neutral  respectively with DC output being parallel.

Does this configuration works ?

what are challenges can be expected in this topology ?

does the existing PFC controller for 3.3kW need to be modified since the 3 power boards output capacitance is in picture ?

  • Hello,

Thank you for reaching out, our team has experience with this topology but need some time to work out the top challenges for a design. Please give us 24 hours and we will get back with a detailed answer or ask some clarifying questions.

    Regards,

    Zach

  • Ok zach, thanks in advance

  • Hello,

While our team has experience with single phase totem pole PFC, and three phase single stage PFC, combining three separate totem pole circuits to create a 3 phase system is less known to us. The main challenge that immediately arises is current imbalance leading to circulating current. Ideally, this current should be 0, but mismatched operation can lead to circulating current and not function correctly. Also, I am unaware of exactly which totem pole PFC controller you are using, but regardless, there must be communication between the three phases to operate correctly, an open-loop approach would not work.

Perhaps if you share your schematic or basic drawing of the setup I can help label some more potential problems, but from my understanding of your original message, the setup you currently have presents some major challenges. Let me know if you have any more questions or want to share more information to add to your description.

    Regards,

    Zach

  • Thank you zach for your time. Of,course i accept that, there can zero sequence current, incase of any mismatch or unbalance. But neutral is engaged in this topology so it can bypass the unbalanced current. but in normal 3 phase PFC we do not use neutral so incase of unbalanced current there is no path for bypassing it. Thats why we are thinking about topology like three phase single stage Totempole PFC.! Schematics not yet developed for this. only internal discussions is going on.

    Thank you
