LM5164-Q1EVM: Something missing from EVM board

Part Number: LM5164-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5164-Q1

Hello, I just have ordered two 5164EVM board for testing. As is shown in Figure 3 in "LM5164-Q1 EVM User Guide", there are contact pins on positions of J1  , J4 and J5, respectively. However, in my ordered EVM board, they are just some golden holes and do not have 'pins' to connect.  So, are these golden holes bonding pads?

When I tried to use tin to solder, I find that the melting tin is very difficult to contact these golden holes, which is very different from the traditional bonding pad.  Therefore, how can I test these pins ?

Thanks a lot for your response.

  • Hi Wentao

The J1,J4,J5  are NC on the PCB. It's the same with the EVMs ordered by other people.

You can use a ground spring as below image to test. (place the tip in the hole). Or of course you can use tin to solder a wire to test the node. I think the reason for that"  the melting tin is very difficult to contact these golden holes" is that the copper area connected with this node is large, so the heat dissipate very fast. It will help if you use a heater to heat the PCB from the bottom and then do the welding.

Or, if you can't do that, you can connect to the same node from other position, for example if you want to test 'SW' node, you can tie to the 8-pin of U1 or the terminal of R2/R4.

    Thanks and best regards.
