Boost Converter with Output Current Limit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MC33063A, LM5155, LM5156, LM5157, LM5158

Hi Team,

I have a customer who is looking to use DCDC bosot converter with built in output current limit. The input will be 7-8.4V (2s battery), output will be 28V to charge supercapacitors.

I found MC33063A might be suitable for their use case, just wondering do we have better alternative (maybe pure boost converter topology) for them? Otherwise I will recommend MC33063A

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Ernest

  • Hi Ernest,

you might check the LM515x devices

    LM5155/LM5156 with external MOSFET

    LM5157/58 with integrated MOSFET

They are the newer generation Boost Controller and Converter offering more features and performance.

But note: all of them (incl. the MC33064) only overs a Inductor peak current limit.

    Best regards,

     Stefan

  • Hi Stefan,

    Thank you.

As updated from customer, their boost requirement is shown as below:

    • Fully Integrated Boost converter 28V from 7.4V Min
    • Input Current Limitation to 0.6 A  fixed or less  (Configurable through Resistor I lim will be good ) with soft start control .
    • Integrated Mosfet for the boost converter (Inductor can be external )
    • Reverse protection from the HV side to the LV side to avoid back flow Integrated to the package
    • Current limiting and protection mechanism on the output side must be Indented for Super capacitor charging application if Limit Is configurable will be better
    • Output OVP

Is there a more suitable boost converter based on the specs above?

    Appreciate your time.

    Best Regards,

    Ernest

  • Hi Ernest,

the LM5158 will provide most of the features above but following items would need to be added externally:

    • Input Current Limitation to 0.6 A  fixed or less  (Configurable through Resistor I lim will be good ) with soft start control .
Softstart is available but if additional functionality, e.g. continuous current limit on input is required this would need to be added externally
    • Current limiting and protection mechanism on the output side must be Indented for Super capacitor charging application if Limit Is configurable will be better

    Best regards,

     Stefan
