BQ34110: backup battery IC Selection

Part Number: BQ34110
I'm looking for a backup battery IC along the lines of your BQ34110 but I'm not sure if this is the best option for my project so I wanted some technical guidance.
I have a computer design I am working on that uses the Renesas ISL9238 battery charger. What I would like to do is use (2) 18350 cells in series as a backup battery for the system. These cells would be user changeable so the specific cells can vary. What would be your suggestion for a suitable IC?
  • bq34110 is best for rarely discharged systems.

When used on the system side, it is important to note that putting in new batteries will result in re-initialization.

TRM section 2.7.1 CEDV Gas Gauging Operational Overview states that. "The system must go through a full charge and then a full discharge cycle before the correct FullChargeCapacity() (FCC) is estimated."

  • This would be used only for a few seconds to gracefully shut the computer down if power is lost to prevent corrupting the image. Allowing the computer to fully charge/discharge if the cells are changed is fine. Would the LEN pin be required to be used or would we be able to allow the computer to drain the cells down to complete the learning cycle?

  • Hello Tyler,

For capacity learning, it must have the conditions as described. Use of LEN pin is optional. LENCTL bit determines if LEN pin is enabled
