LM5018: Output protection

Part Number: LM5018

Does the LM5018 require protection on the SW or FB pins when the device has no voltage applied to Vin?

For reference, I'll use datasheet page 1 typical application schematic.

Can the LM5018 tolerate an external voltage applied to Vout while no voltage applied to Vin?

As shown in typical application section of datasheet, does diode from out to Vcc protect it's output stage when no volts applied to Vin?

  • Hi Jarod, biasing externally the output voltage is OK (While device is disabled), assuming the absmax table is abided to.

It is recommend to have a Schottky diode from VIN to SW, especially in the case the design has a large bank of input capacitors.

This will prevent the inrush current from Vout to Vin to charge the input capacitors being conducted through the high side body diode, but instead, the Schottky diode, whose power rating is more defined than a parastic body diode of a power fet.

Anode would be on SW and Cathode would be on Vin.
