LM25148: Efficiency comparison

Part Number: LM25148

HI Team,

My customer needs two buck ICs to regulate 18V and 12V output rails. These two buck controllers share the common upstream input voltage which is 24V.

Compared to the common 24V input approach, will the efficiency become better if I connect 12V buck's input to 18V rail(as 18V buck's downstream)?

Regards,

Charles

  • Charles,

What are the powers levels for each rail?

I think you can expect similar overall efficiencies.

The 18V to 12V should have better efficiency than 24V to 12V, but that will still add to losses from 24V to 18V.

If the power on the 12V is minimal like 1 or 2A, then it makes sense to step down from the 18V.

However if you pulling more than 12V4A~ 50W then I recommend pulling the 12V from the 24V.

    Hope this helps,
