BQ76942: OTP Questions

Part Number: BQ76942
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO,

The customer encounter some issues when OTP in their lab when using BQstudio.

1. When entering the CONFIG_UPDATE mode, whether we could write the register value into RAM? Because after entering CONFIG_UPDATE mode, when I click write all, there always be communication failure.

2. In the step 5, if not in the config_update mode, the BQ76942 will trigger CUV(Cell under voltage protection). And then BQ76942 will enter shutdown mode. Is there any solution for this?

3. When using OTP function in BQstuido as below, do we still need to enter CONFIG_UPDATE mode manually? Or the Program OTP have included the  enter-CONFIG_UPDATE-mode command?

4. Now the customer are using Program OTP directly without sending entering CONFIG UPDATE command. Besides, the customer are shorting TS2 to GND when OTP, so that the BQ76942 will not enter Shutdown mode. Is it a useful way? In the actual usage, there are some possibility could OTP successfully.

  • Hi Fabio,

I recommend checking to make sure that the Scan button in BQStudio is toggled off when making changes to the registers. Having the Scan on can sometimes interfere with writing to the registers and can cause the write to fail.

I recommend reading this FAQ, specifically the last question.

The Program OTP button in BQStudio will automatically enter and exit CONFIG_UPDATE mode to write the OTP.

Shorting TS2 to GND is not recommended as it risks the part entering a soft-shutdown state if the device ever tries to go into SHUTDOWN mode. The soft-shutdown state is explained in detail at the end of Section 7.5 of the TRM, but in this state all protections, FETs, and communications are disabled while the part is stuck in a state of waiting to enter SHUTDOWN mode.
