Hi,

GUI can communicate with EVM with limited commands.

UART still support hyper terminal if your window can support it. You can define the command in your code.

(b) Does the original firmware of this EVM have UART debug message out?

Yes. There are two UARTs, uart0 and uart1. uart0 is used for debugging through hyper terminal; and uart1 is used for the communication between the primary and the secondary. You can see the schematic.
