BQ25883: BQ25883, BQ28Z610 and TUSB320 on same bus - only BQ28Z610 recognised by bqStudio?

Part Number: BQ25883
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB320, BQ28Z610, BQSTUDIO, EV2400

I have a BQ25883 charger, TUSB320 USB CC control, and BQ28Z610 on the same I2C bus.
When I connect bqStudio, it automatically connects to the BQ28Z610 but not the charger or TUSB320.

i can understand why it might not connect to the TUSB320, but I am thinking that it should connect to the charger.

The charger does seem to be doing something in that it is charging a battery.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal behaviour?

Thanks,

Derek

  • Hello Derek,

The battery gauge will always auto-connect to the EV2400 if they are on the same bus. You can use the advanced communication tab and set the charger address to communicate manually if you would like to do some quick checking. Otherwise you will need to connect the charger first and open BQStudio for it then add the gauge to the bus.

The EV2400 does not support the TUSB devices. Also it does not have arbitration so it can cause collisions if there are other devices trying to drive the I2C lines.

    Sincerely,

  • Thanks Wyatt - much appreciated.

Having tried that, my BQ25883 does not seem to be responding at the moment so I need to investigate that. I will get back to you.

I would have thought that it might be a useful improvement to the software to be able to choose whether one wants to monitor the fuel gauge or charger whilst they are both in circuit.

But thank you. That is most helpful.

    Kind regards,

    Derek

  • Hello Derek,

Unfortunately this application is not the intended operation of the software, BQStudio and EV2400 design was meant for single evaluation at a time, not system level with charger and gauge on the same bus. If you have 2 EV2400s you can open 2 instances of BQStudio and have one talking to the gauge and one to the charger, but there is still a problem of possible communication collisions if you are logging data with one unit on the same bus.

    Sincerely,
