UCC25600: Frequency to be considered for selecting gate drive transformer.

Hi Manikanta,

Regarding the selection of Gate drive Transformer Compactible with UCC25600 IC.

While calculating the ET time for the Gate drive transformer, what Frequency we have to be considered?

Is it good to consider the switching frequency of the system that is calculated from the excel or do we need to design it with the minimum switching frequency supported by the IC considering worst case scenario?

And what will happen if we design the Gate drive transformer for the Nominal Switching frequency, and in operation the system reaches the minimum switching frequency?

Could you please help us on clearing the above query.

Hi Sreeni,

You could consider designing the gate drive transformer for minimum frequency as that's the worst-case condition for core saturation.

In case if you design the gate drive transformer at nominal frequency, you need to make sure Peak flux is not reaching the saturation limit at the minimum frequency.

One more query, is there a limitation to the Gate drive pin of the IC.

What is the max current supported by the Gate drive pin of the IC?

If we use 1:1:1 gate drive transformer, is there any limitation on the total gate charge of the MOSFET?

Attaching the Gate drive transformer datasheet, the part no is highlighted in yellow.

Hi Sreeni,

I would need minimum frequency of LLC and VCC of the UCC25600 voltage to check whether it's the right fit.

You could also use half bridge gate drivers similar to below reference design:

AssemblyData (ti.com)

This would save BOM compared to the one with gate drive transformers.

Pardon for the late reply.

The minimum Switching frequency 104 kHz and the VCC is 15V.

Hi Sreeni,

You could use a gate driver with this controller that can generate both positive negative gate voltages for the SIC Mosfets.
