UCC28063: PFC design

Part Number: UCC28063

I am going to use UCC28063 PFC controller for 500W application having output voltage 390V.

PFC requirement

1) input voltage 85 to 265V

2) line frequency  47 to 63 Hz

3) output power 500W

4) output voltage 390V

5) switching frequency 90KHz

6) full load efficiency 0.9

7) soft start time 0.5s

Can you provide the detailed specifications of boost inductors such as inductor value, boobin details, wire gauge or other required details.

  • Hello Swapnil,

Thank you for your interest in the UCC28063 transition mode (TM) PFC controller.

For your item (5), the switching frequency of this controller is not constant, but varies with load and input voltage.  This is characteristic of TM converters.
The UCC28063 Excel Calculator Tool ( https://www.ti.com/tool/download/SLUC292 )  will help you design your PFC converter and choose the minimum switching frequency.
I suggest that 90kHz is a little high for a minimum frequency because high-line and light-load switching will exceed 200kHz and losses will increase.
I recommend selecting 40kHz as a minimum at 265Vac input.

For your item (7), this controller does not have an explicit soft-start pin or timing.  The soft-start is indirect based on the capacitor values on the COMP pin.
These values are selected for stability first.  The start-up time will be a consequence of the values chosen for loop stability.

The calculator tool will provide a boost inductance value and peak current levels, but does not provide an inductor design procedure.
Please provide the inductor information to a magnetics design house which can work out the optimal design details for your inductor.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
