BQ76952: Host-controlled balancing

Part Number: BQ76952

" For host-controlled balancing, adjacent as well as non-adjacent cells can be balanced.
Host-controlled balancing can be controlled using specific subcommands sent by the host. The device also
returns status information regarding how long cells have been balanced through subcommands."

The  above is the cell balancing description in the datasheet.

It is said the adjacent cells can be balanced together?

But from my understanding, the adjacent cells can not be balanced together. Especially there is external BJT or Mos external balance circuit.

Whether there is some wrong in the description of the datasheet? Or my understanding is wrong?

  • Hello Fabio,

With external cell balancing, adjacent balancing is not possible. Just because of how the external circuitry works.

The datasheet is saying that no adjacent cell balancing is possible if using the autonomous cell balancing algorithm (our device will never balance two adjacent cells at the same time)

If the host-controlled cell balancing is used, adjacent cells can be balanced together. But there are careful considerations needed, such as thermals (due to larger current through the internal balancing FETs) and you have to be careful not to exceed the ABS max of VC0, as this is a low-voltage pin.

With previous generations of devices, such as the BQ769x0 family, there are additional restrictions that made adjacent cell balancing trickier.

Besides these, adjacent cell balancing is allowed.

    Best Regards,

    Luis Hernandez Salomon

  • Quite clear!

    Thanks for your help.
