TPS54260 10cell charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54260, BQ24610, LM358, INA169, TPS54160

My customer want to use TPS54260 as 10cell charger ( Input 50V, charging current =1.5-2.0A)
Is there any recommendation circuit for charger ?
There is a reference circuit using bq24610 with external IC and parts for over 7 cells charger.

In this circuit, INA169 and LM358 is used to keep constant current(CV mode).
Is these IC  possible to generate constant current for TPS5260 ?
I think it may be possible these to connect to FB via diode..

I would appreciate any advise to have constant current mode for TPS54260 as charger.

  • You can use the TPS54260 in constant current mode.  Connect the bottom of the battery string to VSENSE and use a current sense resistor form VSENSE to ground.  For 2 A charging current you will dissipate 1.6 W just in that sense path.  You can reduce this by adding an external current sense amplifier.   Also, your charging current will always be 2 A.  There is no provision for battery conditioning, etc.  You would be much better off using a dedicated battery charge device.

  • Thank you for quick reply.

Is there any reference circuit to show my customer ?
    It would be very help.

  • I only have a reference circuit for TPS54160 as LED driver (current source).  It would not be directly applicable to your application.  I'll check the design database tomorrow to see if there is anything else, but I doubt it as we do not usually recommend TPS54260 for battery charging.
