BQ24170: Large capacitance on charger output

Part Number: BQ24170

Hello,
we are using the BQ24170 charger in a configuration with the system load directly connected to the battery, like figure 23 of the datasheet:

The system we intend to drive with this is an amplifier circuit with relatively high input capacitance (in the range of 1000-2000uF).
The datasheet suggests an output capacitance between 10 and 30uF, depending on the inductance and that the LC resonance frequency should be between 15 and 25kHz.
With 1000uF input capacitance on system, that is difficult to achieve.

Other than reducing the capacitance on the system load, how could you solve this?

  • Hi Christoph,

The 10-30uF low ESR (ceramic) capacitance recommendation is for capacitance close to the charge IC.  Larger capacitance, presumably with higher ESR or series resistance can be attached downstream.

    Regards,

    Jeff
