LM5176: LM5176

Part Number: LM5176
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5170, LM5177

Hello & TI Team,
Thanks for you support on this LM5176.

We would like to know, how we can use LM5716 in a constant current mode in the range of 0.5A to 20A for the battery charger.

Which mean that, If we keep the over current limit to 20A then we would like to change this output current from 0.5 to 20A via an external circuit and suppose this external circuit sets the current to 10A then LM5176 should give 10A even if the load requests more than 10A but should not shut off the output voltage.

Could you please share what extra circuits need to be add for constant current mode using LM5176 ICs.
Awaiting for you quick response on the same.
Thank you!

  • Hi Shankar,

thanks for using E2E. Please give us some time to look into this.

I will come back to you until the end of the week.

    Best regards,

    Moritz

  • Hi Moritz,
    Thanks for you reply.
    Sure, Noted.

  • Hi Shankar,

LM5176 provides an optional average current regulation loop for constant current applications like battery charging. For this, a sense resistor betwenn ISNS+ and ISNS- is used. You might use an external circuit to adjust this resistance.

    Best regards,

    Moritz

  • Hi Moritz,
As you said using ISNS+ & ISNS- we can use this for constant current application.
Can you confirm using this can we achieve our requirement? ( specially for "even load requesting more current (more than 10A) than set current (10A)).
    If yes,
    1) Could you please share what extra external circuits need to be add for constant current mode using LM5176 ICs.
    2) Also as I mentioned we would like "adjustable constant current feature" ( 0.5A to 20A)
Please consider this while sharing external circuit need to be added.

We are okay with adding sense resistance between ISNS+ & ISNS-.

Just for clarity, Once again sharing our requirement here : How we can use LM5716 in a constant current mode in the range of 0.5A to 20A for the battery charger.
Which mean that, If we keep the over current limit to 20A then we would like to change this output current from 0.5 to 20A via an external circuit and suppose this external circuit sets the current to 10A then LM5176 should give 10A even if the load requests more than 10A but should not shut off the output voltage.

  • Hi Shankar,

Is a buck-boost converter required for your application? If not, and a Boost or Buck is enough, i would recommend to use LM5170, which is a current controller. If a buck-boost is required, with LM5176 constant current can be set with a sense resistor as already described. The challenge is the to have the constant current adjustable. You would have to build an external amplifier circuit and feed the signal in the FB pin. the current might be adjustet with a poti then. For reference you can have a look at this schematic from LM5177 datasheet:

Unfortunately i can not help you designing this external circuit.

    Best regards,

    Moritz

  • Hi Moritz,
    Thanks for this.
Is a buck-boost converter required for your application?
=> Yes we are both (buck + boost) converter.

For reference you can have a look at this schematic from LM5177 datasheet:
=> Sure, we will check and get back to you.
    Thank you!

  • Hi Moritz,
Could you re-confirm that should external amplifier output connect to "FB" Or "COMP"  PIn?
Because in LM5177 ( share above image) It is showing COMP pin.

  • Hello Shankar Kanki,

Both is possible, but if an external amplifier is used anyhow, you can directly feed into the COMP as well.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte

  • Thank Brigitte,
Noted, we will share our schematic for your review.
    Thank you!
