BQ40Z50-R2: BQ40z50-R4: Problem in importing .gg file in bqstudio

Dear TI team,

Good day!

We have a project using BQ40Z50-R4 for 3S1P polymer pack. Here we have some issues below and want to clarify how to update new settings every time we change.

(1). We have already got a Golden Image file following the TRM and just want to update some settings in data flash.

Could we use just export the updated gg file and import to other battery packs by using the procedure: import => Write all =>Read all(to double check)?

If yes, we have some trouble when we update the 45pcs sample but around 20pcs have error: CHGV wrong active when using correct charging voltage to charge 12.6V/1A (even lower 12V/1A also has the same problem) and can not be recovered staying in SAFE protection.

, and the power source was pulled at a high voltage 13V(around 0.4V) automatically after XCHG was active.

We check the all settings are all the same as other normal pack(which gg file should be completed updated) and the finally abnormal pack can be fixed by install the srec file.

(2).If we use the srec, should we need to calibrate the voltage, current, and temperature every time when update srec file?

(We found the voltage didn't change after update by srec file. Current sometimes has some tolerance, Temperature by TI default seems be within acceptable tolerance range always without calibration)

(3).Is there any step need to be careful when install gg file and srec?

We found that different gauge IC we use (BQ28Z610, BQ40Z50, BQ40Z80, BQ78350-R1A) has different situation when update gg file, such as waiting time, data flash need repeat importing process more than one time.

Is there any reason or any related factors?

Your advices will be very appreciated.

    I have encountered issues when uploading gg files. There are some register which complain sometime. This method can be problematic. 

    I suggest to use the srec to program every device. Before uploading the srec, you should calibrate every device and run a sanity cycle (chg/dsg) to allow the gauge to sync up with the battery.

    Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

    Might I have the following further confirmation if we use srec and follow your suggestion?

    (1). Should I calibrate voltage, and current again after programming update srec file by bqstudio for every pack?

    (2). When I calibrate current by -2000mA(3S1P Battery capacity 4.1Ah) , sometimes in around 5% q'ty there is still around 15~20mA lower current shown in bqstudio even I continue to pull 2000mA by E-load(Calibrated) for few minutes and calibrate 3times. Other packs' discharge current shown in bqstudio can be within 3~5mA tolerance after calibration. Is this current gap 15~20mA normal?

    (3). Voltage calibration only checks the voltage of Cell#1, Battery, and Pack. how gauge to calibrate the voltage of cell#2, cell#3, and cell#4 in BQ40Z50?

  • Hi James,

    1-  You could take two approaches here. 
    a. Calibrate each pack
    b. measure from 10 to 20 packs and calibrate them using an average value. 

    Please reference to bq40zxx Manufacture, Production, and Calibration.

    2- I would not say ~20mA offset is normal. Please see the above app note for proper calibration process.

    3- The gauge uses the gain factor from cell-1 to calibrate the remaining cells.
