BQ40Z80: Internal Charge Controller

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi Team

I would like to inquire whether BQ40Z80 has internal charge current control function.

-. Batterymode().CC/ICC = 1 (enabled)

-. Charging Current() @bqstudio : display correct current value

   (for example ChargingCurrent() = Rec Temp Charging:Current  Med = 1.0A)

-. If external Charger set to 2.0A in CC mode

-. Current() @bqstudio and charger show 2.0A current

I expected the current to be limited to 1.0A by internal charge controller.

I wonder why it doesn't work.

  • Hello Sangsoo,

    The BQ40Z80 does not control any charging, besides precharge with a fixed resistor. It can only enable or disable charge or discharge with the two FETs. Please review the app note https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/sluaaf8 for more information on the charging with a gauge.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi Wyatt Keller

    What is the purpose of setting the charging current according to temperature and voltage in the advanced charge algo. tab?

    1. The bq40z80 does not have an internal function to control the charge current limitation

         --> Is it right?

    2. it is just broadcasting the charging current to the charger in the smart battery system.

         --> Is it right?

  • Hello,

    Yes both of your points are correct. The gauge does not control current and when it broadcasts to a charger it is telling the charger what current and voltage to chare the battery at, that's one of the reasons for the Advanced Charge Algorithm.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
