BQ40Z50-R2: BQ40Z50-R5 Valid Discharge Termination

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hi,

We work with an updated (to R5) bq40z50-R2.

In a scenario, we want to work 2 series 3600mV 3300mAh cells (total 7200mV 3300mAh). For charge termination, we configured for valid charge termination and it worked very good.

For now, in discharge, I used CUV protection values. I'm not sure is it a correct usage or not? I couldn't find a valid discharge termination stage except EDV flag. I can log the EDV flag is set but I don't see any discharge termination operation when EDV is set. Do you have any suggestion I do?

Thanks,
Best Regards.

  • Hi Cem,

To monitor end of discharge, you can configure Term Voltage under Gas Gauging. See below. This will report SOC= 0% when battery reaches this voltage.

If you want to poll a flag to see when Terminate Discharge has happened, you can monitor FD  flag under GaugingStatus(). Note that FD is also configurable.

  • Hİ Jose,

I want to terminate discharging at 5900mV Cell Voltage.

    So, I configured the IC for 2 series cells; Term Voltage = 5900mV , FD Set Voltage = 3000mV , TD Set Voltage = 3072mV, CUV = 2900mV.

I can see the FLAGs are set (TD, FD, EDV is set) but IC is continuing until reach 5800mV (2xCUV Voltage).

My end goal is for the IC to terminate discharging at 5900mV and not discharge again until it is 5% charged.

  • Hi Cem,

The TD,FD, EDV flags are simply flags, meaning they do not trigger protections. This is for the host to take action at their side when these flags set.

If you wish to disable discharging (meaning turn OFF DSG FET) when battery cell is 5900mV, you can set CUV to 2950mV.

and not discharge again until it is 5% charged.

Please set them properly for your application
