BQ40Z50-R2: Pres Flag is High

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Hello, I've designed a PCB with BQ40Z50-R2 but with this one, I can't charge the battery pack which is 2s li-ion. I can discharge the battery pack yet the undervoltage protection is not working. I see that this PRES flag is always high and I can't turn it off even if the pres pin of the IC is directly connected to the ground.

Down below, you can see that I'm sending commands and it's not helping at all.

  • Hello,

Your question has been received. Please expect a maximum delay of 2 business days in the answer.

  • Hello,

The PRES pin is active low. Meaning that if it is grounded, it is active (high).

Down below, you can see that I'm sending commands and it's not helping at all.

If FET_EN is set under the Manufacturing Status register, the FETs are controlled by the firmware. I suggest you leave FET_EN set for normal operation. If you would like to test the FETs, you can send the FET_EN command on the right window. This will allow you to use the toggle commands. See section 14.1.15 in TRM.

It looks like COV and CUV are set, did you configure the DA config register properly? Bits[1:0]? Are you connecting the cells correctly for a 2S application? See Figure 2-2. Cell Connection Configuration in the User Guide.

  • I don't think this is the problem here. As you can see down below, fets are high yet when I try to charge the battery pack, BQ thinks that Im discharging it.

Here you can see the error:

    almost the applied current value:

    me trying to disable dsgfet

best regards and hope to hear from you soon!

  • Hello Tugba,

It looks like the SRP and SRN pins might be swapped. Are you using a custom board? If so, Can you provide the schematic?

Another possible issue could be that your sense resistor might be damaged.

    me trying to disable dsgfet

You will not be able to manually toggle the FETs as long as FET_EN is set. Please see my previous reply.

    Sorry, yes you are right.

I changed the BQ40Z50 IC and also changed the shunt resistor in case they are damaged. yet nothing happened.

Are you using a custom board?

Yes, I had two prototype PCBs, they are all the same, one of them works correctly. So I really don't know why.

  • Hi Tugba,

The SRN and SRP connections look fine.

Chances are that something else is damaged in the faulty board as you mentioned that the two prototype boards are the same.
