BQ40Z50EVM-561: Fuel Gauge Permanent Wake up and Output (On/Off) Settings

Part Number: BQ40Z50EVM-561
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, USB2ANY, BQSTUDIO

Dear TI,

I hope that you are doing well. I have been able to connect this EVM to EV2400 but I am facing the following issues:
 - The Registers are locked and I don't know where to set the registers.
 - I have to hold wake-up button to use BQ studio otherwise fuel gauge shuts down.
 - The output on PACK+ & PACK- header is shown when wake-up button is pressed and when the load is applied either Charger or DC electronic load the output drops to zero.

Plus, the BQ Management studio UI is not user-friendly.

Can I connect USB2ANY with it as it user-friendly?

I am looking forward for the response.

Regards,
Ahmed Ali

  • Hi Ahmed,

If the registers are locked, you can unseal the gauge using the UNSEAL command in the far right window of bqStudio.

The registers can be set in the Data Memory tab and clicking on the register name, which should pull a window up with the bit values.

How many cells do you have attached to the EVM? The number of cells attached should match the Cell Count bits in the DA Configuration register.

This register can be found by going to Data Memory, Settings, and DA Configuration.

  • Dear Anthony,

I have set the registers accordingly but the FETs are not turning ON. I have tried setting the registers but no luck.
When I manually turn on the FETs through the test points, the EVM works.

I am looking forward to your response.

  • Hi Ahmed,

When setting the initial DA Configuration bits, please hold onto the wake button on the gauge while doing this. This could be why the registers are not setting correctly.

If the FET's are not turning on properly, please confirm that the FET_EN bit is configured correctly.

Please let me know if this helps.

  • Ok. I have tested it.

But I am facing the SOC mapping on LEDs. I have connected the power supply at the input rather than battery.

    Can you guide on that?

And please also guide on charging and discharging cut-off while using the DC electronic load in CC and CV mode.

  • Hi Ahmed,

If you are trying to read the SOC, a learning cycle need to be preformed on the gauge with the battery connected or it will not report the proper SOC. This cannot be preformed with the power supply attached. The directions to accomplish the learning cycle can be found below:

  • Ok, I will test accordingly. Thank you.
