BQ25723: Charger Failure Modes

Part Number: BQ25723

Hello,

We are currently running into an issue where our charger ICs seem to be failing.

The chargers are initially working/charging fine.

The failure mode we are seeing is pin 31 - HIDRV1 - is shorted to GND, pin 28 - REGN - is ~1 V and Battery Management Studio is not able to read any of the ADC registers (0x26, 0x28, 0x2A, 0x2C).  VBUS is 15 V.

Any ideas of what may be causing this?  We are still troubleshooting on our side.

Thanks,
Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

Sorry to hear that. REGN is the bias supply for the driver and other logic inside the BQ25723. It should be 6V if adapter is connected. It is off in low power mode with battery only.

Did you read other registers? Could you post your schematic for a quick review?

    Regards,

    Tiger

  • Hey Tiger,

Above question was determined to be user error.

An actual issue we are now having is the chargers having no V_SYS output and showing a SYS_UVP fault - which is expected since none of the FETs are actively switching.

The chargers operate as expected with an input voltage of 7 - 16 V.

An input voltage of  >16 - 20 V causes the above condition.

Would you expect this is due to our FET/inductor selection or compensation networks?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

It may be helpful to order one BQ25723EVM and follow our user guide as a first step. I don't see a direct link between them.
