LM5116-HT: LM5116 Diode Emulation vs Full Synchronous

Part Number: LM5116-HT

I have a 60V power supply using the LM5116HJD.  I'm currently using diode emulation mode, but I'm wondering if its better not too?  Efficiency at lower power is not a big concern.

I am using a sense resistor (not trying to use Rds ON for current sensing).

I guess my question is whether going to full synchronous mode will help in low power stability?

Also what are the advantages of using full synchronous mode over diode emulation?

Thanks
Ed

  • Hello Ed

FPWM mode provides 1) constant switching frequency at light load and 2) a better load transient performance during light-load to full-load transient .

Also, the diode emulation mode changes system loop gain at the light load  while FPWM mode doesn't.
