BQ28Z610: bq25672

Part Number: BQ28Z610
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25672, BQSTUDIO, BQ25798, EV2400, BQ25672EVM

Hi Team,

We are using charger bq25672 with fuel gauge bq28Z610 to test single cell battery charge/discharge. The charger bq25672 POR default settings for 1S are ICHG 2A VREG 4.2V and VSYS 3.5V per data sheet SLUSEB9A section 8.3.2 PROG Pin configuration. We like to change ICHG limit to1A instead of 2A. We launch BqStudio and select charger bq25798.bqz file (equivalent to bq25672.bqz), trying to set register REG0x03 ICHG to 1000mA and VREG 4160mV, VSYS 3500mV but register updated did not save when restart the charger ? How can change cell POR default settings and save? Please advise. Thanks

  • Hi Tran,

There was datasheet typo.  The latest datasheet has the default charge current for BQ25672 as 1A for all PROG pin configs.  Regarding the registers resetting, when the WD timer expires, the registers reset to default values.  You can either send a WD ping to the WD register or disable the WD timer to prevent this.  Please note that when both VBUS and VBAT fall below their respective UVLO thresholds, the registers to defaults as well.

    Jeff

  •  Hi Jeff,

Thanks for quick response. Ok if POR default is 1A but when we looked at the charge current on the DVM, we saw that it was around 1.5amps. So I'm not sure why the charger is not at 1 amp. Any thought?

Other question related to the gauge bq28x610EVM. We used EV2400 interface adapter, communication is working but when we used EV2300 adapter with jumpers on P2 and P3 following bq28z610EVM quick start guide, there is no communication with the gauge?

    Best,

  • Hi Tran,

I do not know what would cause the charger to regulate high.  We know that if the PCB layout for the charger does not follow the datasheet recommendation very closely, the current regulates too low.  How are you measuring the current?

Unfortunately, I do not support the gauge so I will move to the gauge forum.  If you have a EV2400, I recommend only using it.

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

We are using charger bq25672EVM and bq28z610EVM. We are measuring the current at J2-1N (BAT-) of the gauge bq28z610.

  • Hi Tran,

If using EV2300, please ensure you are using pull up resistors. The EV2300 does not come with pre-built pull ups. So, jumpers should be installed on P2 and P3. See below the firmware version of the EV2300 I used.

  • Hi Jeff,

Go back to the default charge current for 1S of the bq25675EVM as1A, if we want to reset to 500mA for example. How do we do that because we tried with write manual and did not successfully change the value? Thanks.

  • Hi Tran,

did you disable watchdog timer?  You might try using Field View then go to a the 16-bit tab for the charge current for a better GUI experience.

    Jeff
