LMG1210: Is it possible to use SiC G3R40MT12D(GeneSiC)

Part Number: LMG1210
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27301A-Q1, UCC27311A-Q1

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering LMG1210 for G3R40MT12D.

They has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

We are considering LMG1210 with G3R40MT12D.

(1) Is it possible to use?

(2) We’d like to know the guidelines when using SiC.

Could you provide an application note for SiC.

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hey Shinichi,

Thank you for your question regarding the LMG1210.

As for driving SiC FETs, high gate-to-source voltage is needed to achieve low Vds saturation voltage at high drain current. This is due to the low transconductance of the SiC FETs in comparison to Si FETs. With the LMG1210 being a GaN driver, where Gan FETs operate at around 5V Vgs, I don't think this would be optimal in this situation.

Here is a reference to one of our low-side drivers with SiC FETs - LINK

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thank you,

  • Hi William,

    Thank you for your reply.

Actually, the customer confirmed that it is working using LMG1210 for SiC.

On the other hand, LMG1210 is for GaN, in this case, is it not recommended to use it for SiC?

If so, I'll ask the customer to stop considering LMG1210 for SiC.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hey Shinichi,

If your customer has this working in their system under their operating conditions, then they are good to continue with it.

If their bus voltage allows, a product like the new UCC27301A-Q1 or the UCC27311A-Q1 could be a potential candidate here at 120V.

We do have some future products planned that target driving SiC FETs more.

If other protection measures are needed, an isolated gate driver may be a potential solution as well.

Again, the LMG1210 can drive SiC FETs and if it is doing so effectively for them, then that is good.

Let me know if there are any further questions.

    Thank you,

    William Moore

  • Hi William,

    Thank you for your reply.

    I understand.

For driving SiC, LMG1210 is not suitable.

I'll introduce the UCC27301A-Q1 or the UCC27311A-Q1 that you recommended.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
