UCC5350-Q1: Confusion over peak sink and source current

Part Number: UCC5350-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC5350

Hi Team,

I'm looking for automotive grade, isolated gate driver for one of our PSU designs. From the website I found UCC53x0 series which has variable current levels with different output configuration.

In the datasheet, it is given that the part UCC5350 can support min of 5Atyp 10A source/sink current, whereas in the Gate resistor calculator tool, it is considered as 5A max. But it is shown in the characteristics graph that the part can support 10A.

So, which one to consider?

  • Hi Anand,

Below are the single channel UCC53xx family and their source/sink current strengths.

The UCC5350 is rated for 5A sink and source, but just like with all gate driver, if there is 0Ohm or no gate resistor, the actual peak current can be much higher. However it is very important to have a gate resistor so I recommend to make your gate driver selection based on the table above.

  • Hi Akshat,

    Thanks for your input.

Actually I'm planning to have minimum gate resistor in the path based on the MOSFET overshoot conditions. But, I just wanted to confirm if I need higher than 5A for source or sink, whether the UCC5350 able to provide without any degradation in the performance?

NOTE: Based on this parameter provided in electrical characteristics, I thought the Gate driver can without up to 10A max

  • Hi Anand,

Yes, the information in the data table you provided with the max source and sink current is likely from measurements with very small or no gate resistance. The required gate drive for the system will be dependent on the systems needs and the Power switch.

    Akshat

  • Thanks for the confirmation Akshat!
