Hello team,

It is unclear if the part can detect the difference between Class 5/6 as well as class 7/8 negotiations with a switch. This is important for the product (ie detection of class 5 vs 6 and class 7 vs 8 for operation).

In Table 2 in the data sheet, it looks like the TPH, TPL and nBT lines are all the same output for Class 5/6 and class 7/8.

Is there any other way with this part to distinguish between the classes? We really only need to know 12.95, 25.5, 40, 51, 62 and 71W allowances.

Thanks for your patience.

Unfortunately the PD could only report the same TPH/TPL/BT for Class-7 and -8 (Type-4). So does Class-5 and -6 (Type-3).

The PSE could know the PD's classification. Is it possible to use the data line to communicate PSE and MCU to get the classification value?

Hi Eran,

TPS2372 and TPS2373 can distinguish between class 7&8 and 5&6.

When it is Class 5&6: TPH = L, TPL = Hi-Z, BT = L

When it is Class 7&8: TPH = L, TPL = L, BT = L

Hi Diang,

The problem our customer is running into is not distinguishing between 5/6 vs 7/8. The problem they have on the 2373 is that it cant distinguish between 5 vs 6. It also cant distinguish between 7 vs 8.

Is there a way on the 2373 to distinguish between 5 vs 6 and 7 vs 8?

Hi Eran,

Unfortunately our current PDs could not distinguish between Class 5 vs 6 or Class 7 vs 8.

Since Tpye-3 PSE could cover Class 5&6 power and Type-4 PSE could cover Class7&8 power. So in some cases there is not necessary to distinguish between Class 5 vs 6 or Class 7 vs 8.

May I know the reason why there is a need to distinguish between Class 5 vs 6 or Class 7 vs 8? Thanks.
