LM25148: Diode emulation feature when used as a battery charger

Part Number: LM25148

I am interested in using the LM25148 as a battery charger for a 12Volt lead acid battery.

Specs:

Input voltage: 20 – 35 VDC

Output current: 6 Amps

Peak charge output voltage: 14.7 Volts

Float charge output voltage: 13.8 Volts

Battery run test output voltage:  11 Volts

I need to confirm my understanding that the diode emulation feature of the LM25148 will prevent it from discharging the battery under the following conditions.

  • The battery will always be connected to the output of the LM25148, even when power is not connected to the input of the LM25148.
  • After the battery reaches 14.7 Volts, and the current has fallen by about 80%, the setpoint of the LM25148 will be lowered to 13.8 Volts. The battery voltage will fall to that level, but not instantly, so the battery voltage will be higher than the LM25148 output voltage for a while.
  • We do a battery runtime test where we set the output voltage of the LM25148 to 11 Volts to let the battery supply current to the load but want the LM25148 to remain active should the battery be removed or otherwise fail.
