TPS65994AE: Simple 1 port DP alt mode implementation

Part Number: TPS65994AE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987DDK, TPS65987D

Hi,

I am looking for a simple Type-C PD controller with DP alt mode capability. Unfortunately it must have -40 °C temp rating, so it seems TPS65994AE is pretty much the only option. This is a dual port part with a lot of extra features that I don't need.

It would ideally be a completely stand alone solution, only communicating with TUSB1146I for USB/DP muxing and acting as a source port with max 5 V and 3 A capability.

So I have two questions:

1. Is this really the only option from TI for this sort of application? Maybe I have missed better suiting parts.

2. Is it possible to use this part in this kind of way where only 1 port is used and only the internal power path without needing a host controller to achieve this? And if so, any additional information you could provide how to achieve this would be appreciated.

  • Hi Oliver,

Can you provide further details on what kind of application this is for and other project requirements for the Type-C PD port? Does this port need to support other alternate modes such as TBT or USB4? What kind of data role would the PD controller take (UFP, DFP or both)?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi,

It is basically a backup access port for an embedded computer that will normally not need any USB or Display devices. Space is an issue so we wanted to use Type-C for it as it can provide both in one connector.

It only needs DP, no TBT or USB4 needed.

It will be only be DFP.

  • Hi Oliver,

I recommend the TPS65987DDK, it's going some changes (including the operating temperature) so it should meet the project's requirements.

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hi,

Can you provide an estimated timeline when this part will have the extended temp range? Functionally it seems a good match.

  • Hi Oliver,

Let me check and get back to you on this by next Monday!

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hi Oliver,

We currently do not have a specific timeline for when TPS65987DDK will have support for the extended temperature range. Can you provide details on the project timeline (design lock, first board, production, etc.)?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi,

Currently the plan is to have first prototypes in a couple of months. It is ok for them to have the lower temp ratings. Production will probably start in the middle of next year at the earliest. Do you think the higher rated parts will be available already in the second part of next year?

Also, can you explain a bit this statement in the datasheet "This PD controller is only intended for use in USB4 device designs"?

  • Hi Oliver,

I'll need to check internally and see if there's any updates on the increased operating temperature range for TPS65987DDK and get back to you on it. This might be delay due to holidays.

This PD was originally intended to be used for only TBT4 and USB4 designs only, however we are expanding the use case for TPS65987DDK to applications that are not TBT or USB4 related (i.e Display Port only applications). This device is the next generation to the original TPS65987D and meets PD3.1 specifications.

    Thanks and Regards,
