TPS2116: Using with Wireless Charging Output

Part Number: TPS2116

Hi expert, I am developing a device with an option wireless and wired charging both respectively, using TPS2116.

The problem is, as far as I know, Voltage from wireless charging fluctuates so hard at the beginning ( wider range of 1.6~5.5V-the approval input voltage of TPS2116.)

Condition I adopted is priority mode - MODE pin is tied to VIN1, PR1 is tied to VIN1 divieded by voltage divider - and turned on the VIN2(wireless charging) while turning off th VIN1(USB 5VDC).

Above the condition, no Vout comes out. I tried connecting directly VIN2 with Vout while detaching the TPS2116, It worked well.

Below I attatch very simple diagram of my circuit. Every thoughts, ideas or insights will be very appreciated.

Or could you recommend power mux that is allow to use with wireless charging ? Thank you.

Sincerely Yours,

Jake Kang

  • Hi Jake,

    Welcome to e2e!

When you initiate wireless charging, is VIN1 0V? Or is it still above 1.6V? Also, is the voltage on VIN2 the charging voltage, or the unrectified wireless charging signal?

Please note that the device has a soft-start function that ramps up the output over 1.3ms when a valid voltage is applied and VOUT is low - could it be interfering with the wireless charging function?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Thank you for your reply, Mr. Shalton, I've tested three case (very appreciate if you see the file at the bottom)

When Case #1, the VIN is 0V                       → VOUT BLINKS (0V-5V-0V and so on)

When Case #2, the VIN is above 1.6V (5V) → VOUT BLINKS (0V-5V-0V and so on)

When Case #3, I detached the TPS2116 IC → +5V output well functioning

All VIN2 input is the direct output from wireless charging IC

(the given IC datasheet said it is rectified, so I didn't attatch any rectifier.. but should I use some?)

It seems the softly-ramping-up-function does not compatible with my evk that uses Wireless Charging output as a VIN2.

(As you can see the voltage suddenly exceeds 5.5V at short period)

I am not sure to look out some of power mux designed for wireless charging, or something I missing about TPS2116 design.

Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated,

    Thank You.

  • Hi Jake,

Thanks for providing detailed tests. One thing I'd like to verify is that in Case #2, you list that PR1 is 2.5V but in the schematic it is pulled to ground. If MODE and PR1 are high (and VIN1 and VIN2 are high), VIN1 will be output all the time, and if MODE is high and PR1 is low (and VIN1 and VIN2 are high), then VIN2 will be output all the time.

Also, can you share what wireless charging IC you are using? Or, if it is confidential, let me know and we can exchange it privately.

Taking a look at your waveforms, I don't think that TPS2116 is malfunctioning, but it's rather interfering with how the wireless charging IC functions. The wireless charging IC data sheet would be really helpful here. Also, does the +5V net go straight to the battery, or to a battery charging IC?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Dear Patrick, It wasn't TPS2116 fault nor the wireless charging IC's fault.

It was the wrong voltage setting parameter due to adopting high level voltage.

I changed the output voltage by near 4~5V, It works fine.

    Sincerely,
    Jake Kang

  • Hi Jake,

Great to hear that your issue is resolved, please let me know if you have additional questions in the future!

    Thanks,
