TPS55288: Current sinking and current limit

Part Number: TPS55288
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-050017

Hello,

What is the max current TPS55288 can sink?

Also, what is the behavior of the current limit feature when TPS55288 is sinking current since (VISP - VISN) would in theory be negative? i.e. can this device limit current in both sourcing and sinking modes?

Thanks!

Alan

  • Hi Alan,

    Thanks for reaching out.

May I know what is the application here?

For TPS55288, the negative inductor current limit is about 2A.

Since VISP-VISN is negative when TPS55288 is sinking current, the current limit function will not work.

  • Thanks for the information.

Application is basically a TEC driver similar to the design outlined in TIDA-050017 (but with more power output).

I want to connect a TEC/peltier element across input and output for bidirectional driving. I also wanted to take it a step further and use the current limit feature to implement constant current control.

  • Hi Alan,

    Thanks for feedback.

As I replied before, TPS55288 can only implement constant current control in sourcing mode. Maybe you can use an external current sensing method to do the constant current control.
